How to recognize each light band

Low light (under ~500 lux)

A north-facing window, or a few metres back from a bright one. Fine for low-light survivors; too dim for most flowering or variegated plants.

Medium light (~500–1,000 lux)

A bright room without direct sun on the plant. Comfortable for a wide range of easygoing houseplants.

Bright, indirect (~1,000–2,500 lux)

Close to a bright window but out of the sun's direct path. The sweet spot for most tropical houseplants.

Direct sun (over ~2,500 lux)

Direct sunlight hits this spot for part of the day. Great for cacti, succulents, and sun-lovers; will scorch shade plants.
