Button Fern problems & how to fix them

Pellaea rotundifolia

Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Button Fern problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.

Common problems

Root rot

The most common killer — its fine roots rot quickly in constantly wet soil, unusual for a fern. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Overwatering

Treating it like a moisture-loving fern with daily watering does it in. The soil is staying wet longer than the plant can handle, starving roots of oxygen. If caught before roots start rotting, the fix is simple - let the soil dry out and adjust the routine - and most plants bounce back within 2-3 weeks.

Underwatering

It tolerates brief dryness, but a fully desiccated root ball drops leaflets en masse. The plant is not getting enough water, either from infrequent watering or soil so dry it repels water. Prognosis is excellent - most underwatered plants perk up within days of proper rehydration.

Crispy tips (low humidity)

Hot direct sun or air blasting from vents browns the round leaflets. Brown, dry leaf tips caused by air that is too dry for the plant, common in heated or air-conditioned rooms. Existing crispy tips never turn green again, but with higher humidity new growth should come in clean within a few weeks.

The mistakes that most often kill it

  • Watering it on a 'fern schedule' — this one hates constantly wet soil.
  • Deep plastic pots with poor drainage.
  • Swinging between bone dry and waterlogged instead of steady, moderate moisture.
