Inch Plant problems & how to fix them

Tradescantia zebrina

Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Inch Plant problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.

Common problems

Etiolation (insufficient light)

Low light quickly produces long bare stems with faded, greener leaves. The plant is stretching toward light it isn't getting: long gaps between leaves, pale thin growth, and leaning. Stretched growth never compacts again, but with more light all new growth comes in full and sturdy - the plant's future is good.

Root rot

Soft, watery stems collapse when the soil never dries. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Underwatering

Repeated dry-outs crisp the oldest leaves along the stems. The plant is not getting enough water, either from infrequent watering or soil so dry it repels water. Prognosis is excellent - most underwatered plants perk up within days of proper rehydration.

Spider mites

Dry air brings mites to the dense trailing foliage. Tiny sap-sucking mites that thrive in warm, dry air and leave fine webbing and speckled leaves. Caught early they are very treatable; most plants recover fully within 3-4 weeks of consistent treatment.

The mistakes that most often kill it

  • Low light, which turns it into bare green string within months.
  • Standing water in the pot rotting the fragile stems.
  • Never restarting it, since old stems naturally bald from the base.
