Rubber Plant problems & how to fix them
Ficus elastica
Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Rubber Plant problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.
Common problems
Overwatering
Yellowing, dropping lower leaves almost always mean too much water, not too little. The soil is staying wet longer than the plant can handle, starving roots of oxygen. If caught before roots start rotting, the fix is simple - let the soil dry out and adjust the routine - and most plants bounce back within 2-3 weeks.

Root rot
Follows chronic overwatering, especially in a heavy, slow-draining mix. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Scale insects
Sticky residue on leaves or the floor beneath usually means scale insects on stems and midribs. Sap-sucking insects that hide under hard, shell-like bumps stuck to stems and leaves, making them resistant to sprays. Treatment is mostly manual and takes patience, but most plants recover well over 4-6 weeks of consistent removal.

Cold damage
Cold drafts spot and drop leaves. Tissue injury from a cold draft, a chilly windowsill, or a night outdoors below the plant's tolerance. Damaged leaves will not heal, but if the stems and roots survived, new growth typically appears within three to four weeks in a warm, stable spot.

The mistakes that most often kill it
- Watering weekly regardless of the season until the roots rot.
- Keeping it in deep shade — variegated forms in particular fade and drop leaves.
- Ignoring scale until the infestation covers every stem.
