How to care for Calathea White Fusion

Goeppertia lietzei 'White Fusion' · Marantaceae

foliagedemanding to growpet-safe

A marbled fantasy of white, green, and lilac — arguably the most beautiful and most difficult calathea in the trade. The white leaf zones have no chlorophyll and scorch or brown at the slightest provocation. Recommended for growers who already keep other calatheas happy. Water roughly every 5 days while it's growing (about every 9 in winter), give it a bright room away from the window, kept above 61°F (16°C) — it wants humid air.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~5d growing · ~9d dormant
Light: Medium / bright room
Humidity: high humidity
Keep above: 61°F (16°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~2 years

Evenly moist, never soggy, always with distilled or rainwater — the white tissue browns from minerals first.

Bright but soft light; too dim and new leaves emerge green, too bright and the white sections burn.

Very weak (quarter-strength) balanced feed monthly; it is exceptionally sensitive to fertilizer salts.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Ordinary tap water — the number one killer of White Fusions.
  • Low humidity, which browns the white marbling irreversibly.
  • Any full-strength fertilizer application.

Seasonal tips

  • It genuinely does best above 60 percent humidity — a cabinet or humidifier is close to mandatory in winter.
  • If new leaves come in mostly green, nudge it into slightly brighter (still indirect) light.
  • Avoid repotting or dividing outside of spring; recovery is slow.
