Christmas Cactus problems & how to fix them
Schlumbergera × buckleyi
Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Christmas Cactus problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.
Common problems
Root rot
The epiphytic roots rot fast in dense soil that stays wet — the most common cause of collapse. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Underwatering
Segments go limp and wrinkled if treated like a desert cactus. The plant is not getting enough water, either from infrequent watering or soil so dry it repels water. Prognosis is excellent - most underwatered plants perk up within days of proper rehydration.
Fungus gnats
Its moister regime makes the soil surface attractive to gnats in winter. Small dark flies that breed in constantly moist potting soil; the adults are harmless but annoying, while larvae can nibble roots of seedlings and weak plants. Very treatable by drying out the soil; expect the flies to fade over 2-3 weeks.

Sunburn
Summer sun through glass scorches segments reddish-purple. Leaf tissue scorched by more direct sun than the plant was acclimated to, often after moving it to a brighter spot or outdoors. Burned patches are permanent, but the plant itself usually recovers fully once moved - new growth comes in healthy.

The mistakes that most often kill it
- Treating it like a desert cactus and letting it desiccate for weeks.
- Waterlogged, peat-heavy soil rotting the fine epiphyte roots.
- Moving it around while in bud, dropping every flower it worked all autumn to make.
