Cyclamen problems & how to fix them
Cyclamen persicum
Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Cyclamen problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.
Common problems
Root rot
Top-watering into the crown or leaving the pot in a saucer of water rots the tuber. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Cold damage
It loves cool but not frost; below about 41°F (5°C) the fleshy stems collapse. Tissue injury from a cold draft, a chilly windowsill, or a night outdoors below the plant's tolerance. Damaged leaves will not heal, but if the stems and roots survived, new growth typically appears within three to four weeks in a warm, stable spot.

Fungal leaf spot
Botrytis grey mold spreads through spent flowers and dense foliage in stuffy conditions — groom regularly. A fungal infection that creates dark spots inside leaf tissue, often with yellow halos, and spreads through water splash on wet leaves. Existing spots will not heal, but with pruning and drier foliage the spread usually stops within two to three weeks.

Underwatering
It wilts theatrically when dry; a prompt bottom-soak usually revives it fully. The plant is not getting enough water, either from infrequent watering or soil so dry it repels water. Prognosis is excellent - most underwatered plants perk up within days of proper rehydration.
The mistakes that most often kill it
- Watering onto the tuber's crown until it rots.
- Keeping it in a warm, dry room, which forces early collapse.
- Discarding the dormant tuber in summer — it is resting, not dead.
