Elephant Bush problems & how to fix them
Portulacaria afra
Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Elephant Bush problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.
Common problems
Underwatering
Prolonged drought makes it shed leaves wholesale — it is thirstier than it looks. The plant is not getting enough water, either from infrequent watering or soil so dry it repels water. Prognosis is excellent - most underwatered plants perk up within days of proper rehydration.
Root rot
Despite its thirst, standing water in a saucer still rots the fine roots. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Etiolation (insufficient light)
Long bare gaps appear between leaf pairs in inadequate light. The plant is stretching toward light it isn't getting: long gaps between leaves, pale thin growth, and leaning. Stretched growth never compacts again, but with more light all new growth comes in full and sturdy - the plant's future is good.

Spider mites
Fine webbing shows up on stressed plants in hot, dry rooms near heaters. Tiny sap-sucking mites that thrive in warm, dry air and leave fine webbing and speckled leaves. Caught early they are very treatable; most plants recover fully within 3-4 weeks of consistent treatment.

The mistakes that most often kill it
- Leaving it in a waterlogged cachepot with no drainage.
- Deep winter drought while assuming it is 'just a succulent'.
- Exposure to frost or near-freezing drafts, which blackens stems overnight.
