Lucky Bamboo problems & how to fix them

Dracaena sanderiana

Drooping, yellowing, brown tips, or a plant that just won’t thrive? Here are the most common Lucky Bamboo problems, what usually causes them, and how to turn things around.

Common problems

Crispy tips (low humidity)

Chlorinated or fluoridated tap water is the classic cause of yellow, crispy leaf tips. Brown, dry leaf tips caused by air that is too dry for the plant, common in heated or air-conditioned rooms. Existing crispy tips never turn green again, but with higher humidity new growth should come in clean within a few weeks.

Root rot

Stale, unchanged water or soggy soil turns canes yellow and mushy from the base. A fungal or bacterial infection of the roots, almost always triggered by soil staying wet too long. Caught early, most plants recover within a few weeks after repotting; if most roots are already mushy, recovery is uncertain.

Sunburn

Direct sun quickly scorches the thin leaves. Leaf tissue scorched by more direct sun than the plant was acclimated to, often after moving it to a brighter spot or outdoors. Burned patches are permanent, but the plant itself usually recovers fully once moved - new growth comes in healthy.

Fertilizer burn

Even modest fertilizer doses burn water-grown roots. Root and leaf damage from a buildup of fertilizer salts in the soil, usually after overfeeding. Burned leaf tissue will not recover, but flushing the soil stops further damage and most plants push healthy new growth within two to three weeks.

The mistakes that most often kill it

  • Using cold, heavily chlorinated tap water straight from the faucet.
  • Letting the water go stale and slimy for weeks.
  • Placing it in hot direct sun.
