How to care for Alocasia Polly

Alocasia × amazonica 'Polly' · Araceae

foliagedemanding to growtoxic to pets

A compact hybrid alocasia with dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves in glossy near-black green, edged and veined in bright white. It is a stunner with strong opinions: warmth, humidity, and even moisture, or it starts dropping leaves. Like many alocasias it may die back to its tuber in winter and resprout in spring — dormancy is not death. Water roughly every 5 days while it's growing (about every 12 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 61°F (16°C) — it wants humid air.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~5d growing · ~12d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: high humidity
Keep above: 61°F (16°C)
Feed: every ~21d in season
Repot: every ~18 months

Keep lightly and evenly moist in an airy mix during growth; if it goes dormant, water only sparingly until new shoots appear.

Bright indirect light close to a window; too dim and it sheds leaves one by one until few remain.

Quarter-to-half-strength balanced feed every 3 weeks while actively growing; none during dormancy.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Tossing a dormant tuber that would have resprouted.
  • Cold and wet at the same time — the classic alocasia killer.
  • Ignoring spider mites until every leaf is stippled and lost.

Seasonal tips

  • If it drops all leaves in winter, keep the tuber barely moist and warm — it usually returns in spring.
  • Raise humidity before heating season to stay ahead of spider mites.
  • Resume feeding only when new growth appears in spring.
