How to care for Air Plant

Tillandsia ionantha · Bromeliaceae

othereasy to growtoxicity unknown

A palm-sized bromeliad that grows without any soil, drinking through the silvery scales on its leaves. It blushes red and produces violet flowers when mature, and asks only for bright light, a regular soak, and — critically — a thorough dry-off afterwards. Water roughly every 5 days while it's growing (about every 8 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 50°F (10°C) — average room humidity suits it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~5d growing · ~8d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: average room humidity
Keep above: 50°F (10°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~10 years

Dunk or soak in room-temperature water for 20-30 minutes, then shake it out and let it dry completely upside down within a few hours.

Bright indirect light near a window; some gentle direct sun is fine for this silvery, drought-adapted species.

Monthly with a bromeliad or air-plant fertilizer at quarter strength added to the soaking water.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Letting water sit in the crown after soaking — rot follows within weeks.
  • Relying on the occasional mist as its only water.
  • Gluing it into a decoration that can never be soaked or dried properly.

Seasonal tips

  • Soak more often in summer and during heating season, when air is driest.
  • After it flowers, the mother plant slowly declines while producing pups — leave them attached until half her size.
  • Never display it in a closed terrarium with standing moisture; airflow is life.
