How to care for Areca Palm

Dypsis lutescens · Arecaceae

palmmoderate to growpet-safe

A clumping palm from Madagascar with arching, feathery fronds on golden cane-like stems — the quintessential 'tropical corner' plant. Given bright light and steady moisture it grows into a lush indoor screen. It is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but fussier about water quality and humidity than a parlor palm. Water roughly every 6 days while it's growing (about every 10 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 55°F (13°C) — it wants humid air.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~6d growing · ~10d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: high humidity
Keep above: 55°F (13°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~2 years

Keep the soil lightly moist, watering when the top few centimeters dry — preferably with filtered or rain water, as it is sensitive to salts and fluoride.

Lots of bright, indirect light near a sunny window; a little gentle morning sun is fine, but hot afternoon sun scorches.

Half-strength balanced fertilizer monthly in the growing season; flush the pot occasionally to prevent salt buildup.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Watering with heavily softened or salty water year after year.
  • Letting the root ball dry out completely and repeatedly.
  • Dark corners — it declines slowly but surely without strong light.

Seasonal tips

  • Flush the soil with plenty of water every couple of months to wash out salts.
  • Boost humidity in winter — grouped plants or a humidifier keep tips green.
  • Remove entire dead canes at the base; individual fronds don't regrow once browned.
