How to care for Fishbone Cactus

Disocactus anguliger · Cactaceae

cactuseasy to growtoxicity unknown

A jungle cactus from Mexican rainforests with flat, zigzag stems that cascade like a string of fish skeletons. Unlike desert cacti it grows on trees in the wild, so it enjoys more water and softer light than its spiny cousins. Mature plants can surprise you with large, fragrant nocturnal flowers in autumn. Water roughly every 10 days while it's growing (about every 21 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 50°F (10°C) — average room humidity suits it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~10d growing · ~21d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: average room humidity
Keep above: 50°F (10°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~2 years

Water thoroughly when the top few centimeters of the chunky mix are dry — it likes more moisture than a desert cactus but still hates sitting wet.

Bright, filtered light near an east window is ideal; harsh midday sun scorches the flat stems.

Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength through spring and summer.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Potting it in standard cactus grit and watering monthly — it is a rainforest plant, not a desert one.
  • Letting it sit in waterlogged, heavy soil, which rots the fine roots.
  • Baking it in full sun until the stems bleach and collapse.

Seasonal tips

  • Cool nights (10-15 C) and drier soil in autumn help trigger flower buds.
  • Move it slightly back from windows in midsummer to avoid scorch.
  • Resume regular watering and feeding when new stem growth appears in spring.
