How to care for Old Man Cactus

Cephalocereus senilis · Cactaceae

cactusmoderate to growpet-safe

A Mexican columnar cactus wrapped in long, shaggy white hairs that give it the look of a wise, woolly elder. The hair is actually modified spines that shade the plant from intense desert sun — sharp spines hide beneath the fluff. Indoors it stays small for years and asks mostly for sun and restraint with the watering can. Water roughly every 16 days while it's growing (about every 40 in winter), give it direct sun, kept above 45°F (7°C) — dry air is fine for it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~16d growing · ~40d dormant
Light: Direct sun
Humidity: dry air is fine — no extra humidity needed
Keep above: 45°F (7°C)
Feed: every ~45d in season
Repot: every ~3 years

Water deeply only when the soil has been fully dry for several days, and keep water off the hairy coat.

Needs direct sun for several hours daily — a south-facing window keeps the coat dense and white.

Half-strength cactus fertilizer two or three times in spring and summer.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Winter watering — a cold, wet root ball is nearly always fatal.
  • Misting or washing the hair, which invites rot and mealybugs beneath it.
  • Too little sun, which makes the new growth thin, green, and bald.

Seasonal tips

  • Give it a cool (10-15 C), almost completely dry winter rest.
  • Dirty wool can be cleaned with a soft dry brush — never wet the coat.
  • Acclimate gradually to outdoor summer sun to avoid scorching the tip.
