How to care for Peruvian Apple Cactus

Cereus repandus · Cactaceae

cactuseasy to growtoxicity unknown

A stately blue-green columnar cactus that can slowly become a genuine indoor tree, with ribbed stems and a frosted, architectural look. Outdoors it bears big white night flowers and edible red fruit; indoors it is grown mostly for its sculptural presence. Fast for a cactus when it gets real sun. Water roughly every 14 days while it's growing (about every 35 in winter), give it direct sun, kept above 46°F (8°C) — dry air is fine for it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~14d growing · ~35d dormant
Light: Direct sun
Humidity: dry air is fine — no extra humidity needed
Keep above: 46°F (8°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~2 years

Water deeply when the soil is fully dry — large columns drink more than you expect in summer and almost nothing in winter.

Put it at your brightest window or a sunny patio in summer; weak light produces thin, weak new growth.

Half-strength cactus fertilizer monthly in the growing season — it is hungrier than small cacti.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Overpotting into a huge container that stays wet for weeks.
  • Years in dim light, producing top growth too weak to hold itself up.
  • Watering in winter while the plant is cold and dormant.

Seasonal tips

  • Summer outdoors in full sun (acclimated gradually) gives it a year of growth in one season.
  • Bring it in well before nights drop below about 8 C.
  • Stake tall columns after repotting until the roots re-anchor.
