How to care for Pincushion Cactus

Mammillaria crinita · Cactaceae

cactuseasy to growtoxicity unknown

A small globe of soft-looking tubercles tipped with hooked spines, rarely bigger than a fist and happy on a sunny windowsill for decades. Like most Mammillaria it blooms generously indoors, producing a neat crown of small pink flowers in spring. One of the best first cacti a person can own. Water roughly every 14 days while it's growing (about every 35 in winter), give it direct sun, kept above 45°F (7°C) — dry air is fine for it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~14d growing · ~35d dormant
Light: Direct sun
Humidity: dry air is fine — no extra humidity needed
Keep above: 45°F (7°C)
Feed: every ~45d in season
Repot: every ~3 years

Drench and dry completely between waterings, watering the soil from the side to keep the crown dry.

A south-facing sill with several hours of direct sun keeps it compact and encourages the flower ring.

Half-strength cactus fertilizer two or three times in spring and summer.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Weekly watering all year round.
  • A warm, dark winter with moist soil — no rest, no flowers, then rot.
  • Deep pots of rich soil that stay damp around the shallow roots.

Seasonal tips

  • A cool, dry winter rest (around 10 C) is what triggers the spring flower crown.
  • Water can rot the woolly crown — always water around the plant, not over it.
  • Repot in spring using a folded towel or tongs to handle the hooked spines.
