How to care for Snake Plant

Dracaena trifasciata · Asparagaceae

succulenteasy to growtoxic to pets

The famously indestructible houseplant, with stiff upright sword leaves banded in gray-green, formerly known as Sansevieria trifasciata. It tolerates low light, dry air, and long stretches of neglect, though it grows best with more light than it merely survives in. Practically the only way to kill one is with the watering can. Water roughly every 14 days while it's growing (about every 30 in winter), give it a bright room away from the window, kept above 50°F (10°C) — dry air is fine for it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~14d growing · ~30d dormant
Light: Medium / bright room
Humidity: dry air is fine — no extra humidity needed
Keep above: 50°F (10°C)
Feed: every ~60d in season
Repot: every ~3 years

Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry, and keep water out of the leaf rosette to prevent crown rot.

Survives low light but grows fastest and holds its patterning near a bright window; avoid sudden moves into direct sun.

Half-strength balanced or cactus fertilizer every couple of months in spring and summer.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Frequent 'little sips' of water that keep the soil perpetually moist.
  • Letting water pool in the center of the leaf rosette, causing crown rot.
  • Cold, wet soil near a drafty winter window.

Seasonal tips

  • In winter it can go a month or more between waterings — when in doubt, wait.
  • Wipe the leaves occasionally; dust noticeably dulls the banding.
  • Divide crowded clumps in spring for easy new plants.
