How to care for Flaming Sword

Vriesea splendens · Bromeliaceae

floweringmoderate to growtoxicity unknown

The flaming sword pairs handsome tiger-striped leaves with a tall, flattened spike of brilliant red bracts — a sword of flame that lasts for months. It is a tank bromeliad from humid South American forests, drinking from its central cup and preferring warmth year-round. Even out of bloom, the banded foliage earns its spot. Water roughly every 7 days while it's growing (about every 12 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 59°F (15°C) — it wants humid air.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~7d growing · ~12d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: high humidity
Keep above: 59°F (15°C)
Feed: every ~30d in season
Repot: every ~2 years

Keep fresh, preferably soft water in the central cup, flushed every few weeks, and let the airy mix nearly dry between light waterings.

Bright, indirect light; enough to keep the leaf banding crisp, but shielded from harsh direct sun.

Quarter-strength liquid feed monthly, misted onto foliage or added to the mix in the warm months.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Cold winter rooms and windowsill chills.
  • Watering the soil like a normal houseplant while the cup stands empty or stagnant.
  • Harsh direct sun that scorches the striped leaves.

Seasonal tips

  • Keep it warm and humid through winter — this vriesea resents cold more than its relatives.
  • Refresh the cup water regularly with rainwater or filtered water.
  • After the sword fades, grow on the offsets in bright warmth for the next bloom in a few years.
