How to care for Zebra Haworthia

Haworthiopsis fasciata · Asphodelaceae

succulenteasy to growpet-safe

A compact rosette of dark pointed leaves banded with raised white 'zebra' stripes, perfect for desks and windowsills. Unlike most succulents it tolerates bright indirect light without stretching badly, since it grows in shaded rock crevices in the wild. Slow, small, and very hard to kill — except with water. Water roughly every 14 days while it's growing (about every 30 in winter), give it bright, indirect light, kept above 45°F (7°C) — dry air is fine for it.

Care at a glance

Water: every ~14d growing · ~30d dormant
Light: Bright, indirect light
Humidity: dry air is fine — no extra humidity needed
Keep above: 45°F (7°C)
Feed: every ~90d in season
Repot: every ~3 years

Water deeply when the soil is fully dry, keeping water out of the tight rosette; reddish or purple-tinged leaves signal light stress, not thirst.

Bright indirect light near a window; unlike most succulents, harsh all-day direct sun turns it red-brown and stressed.

Quarter-strength cactus fertilizer once or twice a year is ample.

Mistakes that kill this plant

  • Watering more than a couple of times a month, ever.
  • Letting water sit in the rosette center in a cool room.
  • Cramming it onto a scorching south windowsill like a cactus.

Seasonal tips

  • Water roughly monthly in winter, keeping it cool and bright.
  • Separate pups in spring once they have a few leaves of their own.
  • Dried leaf tips are usually old age or drought — trim for tidiness.
